Acme Packet Introduces Net-Net 3800

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Helping contact centers and service providers who are looking to control up to 500 simultaneous VoIP/Unified Communications (News - Alert) (UC) sessions, Acme Packet has introduced Net-Net 3800. The company states that Net-Net 3800 is a low-end session border controller (SBC) for SMBs.

A Session Border Controller (SBC) is used in a network to control call admission to a network at the border of that network. This VoIP session-aware device eases the load on the call agents within the network by optionally performing a host of call control functions. Session Border Controllers are available in both centralized and distributed formats.

According to Acme Packet (News - Alert), the Net-Net 3800 complements the company’s mid-range Net-Net 4000 and high-end Net-Net 9000 series platforms. The product offers economical low-end SBC without sacrificing capabilities available in Acme Packet’s Net-Net OS. The Net-Net 3800 secures the SIP/H.323 trunking border to service provider IP networks and the Internet border to remote offices, teleworkers and mobile employees.

“Until now, the enterprise market has lacked a right-sized SBC solution that still draws strongly from the SBC’s carrier-class heritage in terms of feature and functionality,” said Matthias Machowinski, Directing Analyst, Enterprise Voice and Data at Infonetics Research (News - Alert). “With the introduction of Acme Packet's Net-Net 3800, enterprises can deploy SBCs in their networks that best meet their unique scaling and pricing requirements.”

The Net-Net 3800 provides interoperability with and between legacy IP PBX (News - Alert) equipment and next-generation unified communications platforms with its SIP and H.323 interworking capabilities. With encryption ensuring session privacy and call/session replication for recording, regulatory compliance requirements are also. The product also secures the subscriber access and interconnect/peering borders.

The product offers the capacity of 500 simultaneous media sessions, 5,000 TLS sessions, 5,000 IPsec tunnels, 500,000 route table entries.

Recently, LightEdge, a hosted services provider dedicated to the communications and IT needs of SMBs deployed Acme Packet’s Net-Net session border controller. The company is using Acme Packet SBCs to deliver its recently announced Hosted Unified Communications, a new service based on BroadSoft’s BroadWorks VoIP application platform as well as Microsoft Solution for Hosted Messaging and Collaboration.
