Actiontec New Universal DSL Wireless Gateway Powers Next-Gen Digital Homes

Actiontec Electronics, a provider of broadband-powered solutions, said it is conducting field trials of its VDSL2/ADSL2+ Universal DSL Wireless Gateways for several leading North American carriers.

Scheduled for the end of February, the field trials will run for a couple of months and involve VDSL2 ultra-broadband delivery to several hundred homes, the company said.

With this solution, carriers are able to remotely help customers diagnose and resolve problems in the home network and configure new services to give consumers an enhanced, trouble-free experience as they migrate to media-rich, triple play services, officials said.

Built on VDSL2 and ADSL2+ ultra-broadband technology, Actiontec's Universal DSL Gateway (News - Alert) offers high-end processing power and rich home networking connectivity options to fuel next-generation high-speed data, high-definition TV (HDTV), and Voice over IP (VoIP) services.

Universal DSL Gateway is capable of throughput speeds up to 100 Mbps upstream and downstream. This would enable carriers to deploy ultra-broadband service via any access protocol (ATM or PTM) and any access architecture including CO-based DSLAM, remote DSLAM, and FTTx, Actiontec said.

The gateway solution supports standards-based remote management, so it reduces the operational costs associated with deploying and managing customer premise equipment (CPE) devices in the home through remote provisioning, firmware upgrades, monitoring and diagnostics.

“During recent months, we completed successful lab trials with major North American carriers and we are confident the Universal DSL Gateway will continue to perform beyond expectations as we move into field deployments,” said Brian Henrichs, Actiontec vice president of business development, in a statement.

The Universal DSL modem router integrates an ADSL2+, VDSL, and VDSL2 modem, 4 port Ethernet switch, 802.11n wireless router, and firewall. The device can simultaneously support a wide range of demanding multimedia applications, including HDTV, standard TV, Voice over WiFi (News - Alert), media sharing, and online gaming.

The Universal Gateway also provides enhanced networking options for distributing premium content throughout the digital home with support for Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) and HomePNA (News - Alert) (HPNA3).

The new modem router is also capable of improving impulse noise resilience and up to a 15 percent service reaches improvement. With this, carriers are able to significantly improve their IPTV (News - Alert) and high-speed data services, extend their network service area, and deliver triple play services to more subscribers.
