GyPSii's Unveils Upgraded Mobile Social Networking Application

By Michael Dinan

The makers of a mobile device application said today that improvements to their product will help users contact people, get directions and find out what’s going on faster.

Amsterdam-based GyPSii said its feature set now gives users faster access to Windows Mobile and allows them to invite contacts through popular e-mail and social networking Web sites such as Microsoft (News - Alert) Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, AOL, FastMail.FM, Gmail, GMX, Hotmail, Indiatimes, Mail.com, Yahoo, Facebook, Friendster, Hi5, Linkedin and MySpace.

Dan Harple, the company’s chief executive officer, said his company is trying to create an application that will become an indispensable part of the mobile device user’s life.

“The new GyPSii features further extend its position as the mobile lifestyle application that’s turning the mobile phone into a personal digital life recorder,” Harple said.

Experts say that about 200 companies around the globe are now focused on the rapidly growing mobile social-networking market. Some Internet giants, such as Yahoo! and Google (News - Alert), are interested in the market – as Microsoft Corp.’s recent interaction with Facebook demonstrates – though it consists mostly of smaller software companies such as GyPSii.

GyPSii describes its product as “a mobile lifestyle application.” It can serve as a social networking site for communities and a home to share pictures, video, audio, and content with friends and other groups, according to the company, and can also use location information to provide a database of user-generated content.

According to Harple, the service can serve users in times of need as well as recreationally.

“Only this week a GyPSii member, living in China, recorded in real-time the tragic earthquake in Chengdu and shared it with the whole GyPSii community,” Harple said. “This exemplifies GyPSii’s ability to share live events, anywhere, anytime, with the GyPSii community.”

The company’s new application also connects users to any public action on a member friend’s homepage, according to GyPSii. The application’s so-called “Mobile PlaceMe” reminder e-mails members after they’ve used GyPSii’s mobile platform, and a friend search filtering tool allows users to view friends in the order that they joined the network.
