Robbers target food-delivery drivers

Authorities are warning restaurants about a team of robbers that targeted two food-delivery workers last week, badly beating one of them.
"These were brutal assaults for a low amount of money," Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said Friday. "These people are very dangerous."
In the latest incident, a man delivering Chinese food was assaulted Sept. 25 in an ambush in South Tacoma, police spokesman Mark Fulghum said.
A woman called the Mandarin Palace on Pacific Avenue about 2 p.m., ordered food and asked that it be delivered to what turned out to be a vacant apartment at South 73rd Street and South Wilkeson Street, Fulghum said.
"She requested that the driver bring change for a hundred-dollar bill," Fulghum said.
When the man arrived about 2 p.m., he was robbed at gunpoint of the food and cash and beaten by two men and a woman and left bound with duct tape, Fulghum said. The victim spent time in the hospital following the attack.
He was unable to provide a detailed description of his assailants.
Two days earlier, a woman delivering pizza for a Spanaway Pizza Hut was similarly assaulted.
Pierce County Sheriff spokesman Detective Ed Troyer said a woman called and ordered pizza delivered to a house in the 400 block of 141st Street South shortly after 1 p.m.
She also asked the delivery person to bring change for a $100 bill.
When the delivery person got to the house - which turned out to be for sale and empty - a woman pulled out a gun and robbed her of cash and the pizza. Her car also was stolen but was found later, Troyer said.
A man who was hiding when the delivery driver arrived roughed her up and bound her hands with zip cord and her feet and mouth with duct tape, Troyer added.
The pizza deliverer said both her assailants were African American. She described the woman as heavy-set and about 5 feet 7 inches tall, and the man as 6 feet tall with a medium build. Both wore baseball caps.
Fulghum urged delivery workers to pay careful attention to orders, particularly if there is a request to bring change for a large bill.
