Boehner cheers on McCain supporters at Perrysburg volunteer phone bank
Nov 01, 2008 (The Blade - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
House Minority Leader John Boehner (R., West Chester, Ohio) stopped by the Wood County Victory Center in Perrysburg yesterday to cheer on the volunteers working the phones for Republican presidential hopeful John McCain.
"None of us that get elected get elected by ourselves," Mr. Boehner told the group packed into a second-floor suite at the Country Charm shopping center. "We've got to have a big team of volunteers, and John McCain and Sarah Palin are no different. Everything that you're doing is critically important in terms of winning this election. It is winnable. Let me just tell you, the numbers in Ohio are very close."
U.S. Rep. Bob Latta (R., Bowling Green), who joined Mr. Boehner during his brief appearance, said he's convinced that personal calls by campaign volunteers helped get him elected to fill the 5th District Congressional seat last December.
"People appreciate getting these personal calls over the robo-calls," Mr. Latta said.
Among the volunteers was 10-year-old Rheanon Stewart, a home-schooled Perrysburg resident who said she supports Mr. McCain "because he's for life."
The youngster said when she makes calls for the campaign, she introduces herself, then asks whether the person on the other end of the line plans to vote for Mr. McCain.
"I hear lots of yeses, lots of no's, and some people say they're undecided," Rheanon said. "How can you be undecided? It's so close to the election."
Sue Goliver, who is a volunteer from Bowling Green, said she has been surprised to find that most of the people she reaches by phone are polite and willing to talk.
"I find that many of them ask me questions," she said.
Ms. Goliver had a question for Mr. Boehner, who has pushed for the U.S. Justice Department to investigate mismatched voter registration records in Ohio and force Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner to release information about discrepancies in registrations.
"I'm very concerned about voter fraud," Ms. Goliver said. "What can we do as citizens to get this taken care of?"
Mr. Boehner said there's no question the voter system is being abused.
"The first thing we need to do is stop groups like ACORN from getting your tax dollars to go out and abuse the electoral process," he said. "Secondly, we need to get our secretary of state to follow the law. She has a database with all this information about our citizens and won't let the local county boards of elections use that database to match up Social Security numbers and driver's license numbers to make sure that people are legitimate."
"I want everyone who's eligible to vote to vote," he added, "but nobody should have more than one vote."
Mr. Boehner last week asked the U.S. Justice Department to intervene, but a department spokesman said it was pleased with Ms. Brunner's cooperation and would continue to monitor the situation.
