Poll: McCain has wide lead in Kentucky

(UPI Top Stories Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Republican presidential nominee John McCain leads Democrat Barack Obama in Kentucky in the days before the November election, a poll indicates.

McCain leads Obama among likely voters, 51 percent to 42 percent, the (Louisville) Courier-Journal Bluegrass Poll found. The poll indicates that 7 percent of likely voters in the state remain undecided.

The newspaper reported that a month ago, the Bluegrass Poll showed McCain had a 53-41 lead over Obama.

This is not a liberal state and we don't usually vote for national Democrats, said Stephen Voss, associate professor of political science at the University of Kentucky. Obama is the latest national Democrat who's having trouble here.

The poll by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. interviewed 817 likely Kentucky voters by telephone Monday through Wednesday. The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
